The Military & Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem is an Ecumenical Order of Chivalry which traces its foundations to the 4th century. The first written reference to the Order of Saint Lazarus as a "knightly" order is a letter written by Henry II, King of England and Duke of Normandy, dated 1159. In the centuries that followed the Order evolved into an honorific distinction bestowed by the Kings of France.

Today, the 49th Grand Master of the Order is His Excellency Don Carlos Gereda de Borbon, Marquis de Almazan, a cousin of King Juan Carlos of Spain. The Order’s Spiritual Protector is Patriarch Gregory III of Jerusalem. The Order was brought to Ireland in 1962 by Lord Dunsany. The Order is present in many other countries and each year realises its ecumenical and chivalric aims by supporting inter-faith activities and by raising considerable funds for charities in Ireland and all over the world.
